Bisbee Backyard Project

Bisbee Science Exploration and Research Center - Bisbee, AZ (2025 - present)

The Bisbee Backyard Project is a community-driven initiative to transform an eight-acre property owned by the Bisbee Unified School District into a regenerative public learning ecosystem — a space where science, culture, and community life intersect. The project brings together landscape architects, interpretive planners, educators, and community stakeholders to design an outdoor environment that serves both K-12 students and the broader Bisbee community.

I was brought on as a consultant to support content development, interpretive research, and indigenous community outreach across multiple phases of the project.

Indigenous Community Outreach

A central part of my work was developing a framework for meaningful, non-extractive collaboration with the indigenous tribes of the region. This involved researching best practices in indigenous museum and cultural heritage consultation, conducting interviews with museum directors and tribal cultural resources officers, and writing the outreach materials used to initiate the project's first formal meeting with tribal representatives. I also created a structured collaboration framework to guide the ongoing relationship between the project and tribal partners — built on principles of community agency, reciprocity, and cultural respect.

Interpretive Research & Content Development

I conducted research and produced content briefs on a range of topics including water history in Bisbee, the science of sports, and marine biology. These briefs were developed to support the interpretive planning team in shaping the educational content of the park's exhibit stations. I participated regularly in content development and interpretive planning meetings, contributing ideas and analysis to the broader design process.
